Thread: Reel Questions

    Default Reel Questions

I have an old Penn 60 Long Beach and an old Senator 3/0 that work perfect and are in new condition. They both have metal spools. I was wondering if these reels could be used with 65lb spectra w/flouro leader for trolling (off my kayak) for yellowtail or white seabass?

Was thinking of doing this off my kayak as I dont like to bring nicer gear out there.
    Thanks

You can use both but if I had to choose one it would be the 3/0.
I've used Newell 220 for big fish off La Jolla while slow trolling
live bait on my yak. A few friends used 220's to land T-sharks
    off their yaks.

So these reels can handle the 65lb spectra?
    Thanks

Yes, especially if you are going to fish from your kayak. It's going to be hard for
most fish to break you off unless they find structure or kelp. They are going to
tow you around till they die!!!! Just make sure your drag is set proper.

Different story if you are going to fish from a boat. The 3/0 has the same guts
as a 500 w/ a slower gear ratio. 65# spectra is going to test the drag on the
    3/0.
