Thread: La Jolla Yellowtail Report

    Default La Jolla Yellowtail Report

Fished out at La Jolla on Labor day weekend and the weather was amazing. First morning out caught some mackerel for bait and started trolling them around fly lined. After a couple of hours finally had something pulling drag and got me a little excited. After three unsuccessful trips maybe I'd finally hook a fish! So I put the clicker into gear and the fish starts running. The battle went a few minutes and a nice guy fishing near me helped gaff it to land my first yellowtail every and I caught it on the kayak! It wasn't huge but I was stoked. Will include pics and video.

Then Monday went out in the dense fog and didn't caught a squid and some green backs. Was trolling the squid on a weighted line and a fly lined mackerel as well. Right away had a tug on the squid that got off. Kept trolling the squid and had another hit on it. Stopped and lowered it to the bottom and something grabbed onto it, I set the hook and nothing. So lost my only squid. Kept trolling the mackerel and had a sealion steal my bait. He stole a couple more from me. I have have had another hit. Then I tried lowering a mackeral to the bottom for a bit and something grabbed it as soon has it hit the bottom. I let it shew on it for a bit then set the hook. Nothing though. Reeled it up and there was a big halibut chomp on the mackerel. Too bad I didn't get him, those were pretty wide jaws, probably a good one.

You can do it man, La Jolla is cake! Launching from la jolla shores you drive your truck right onto the sand dump the boat and park. Then paddle out through two to three small shore breaks on the worst of days. Very easy!

I don't understand your question? Are you scared of sharks? I've never been bothered by a shark. Shark attacks on kayaks are pretty rare. You are still more likely to die on the way to go fishing on the road then get eaten by a shark.

I hear you! It is a 2 hour drive from where I am as well, so I don't get to go that often. Sure wish I was closer so I could put more time in. Sorry, I work tuesday so wont be able to join you in Cabrillo. What you catching out there? I have heard guys catch some nice sea bass and halibut. But I wouldn't know where to start fishing in the first place. Good luck out there. Let me know how you do.

Nice report what type of hooks where you using seems like you could have used a trap rig and bigger hooks since you missed a few hits.
