For perch I use a 8' diawa spinmatic ultralight ($40) with 2-4lb line, its good up to 3/8oz sinker. Above that I use a penn 8'6" med light casting rod with 6lb.

A Shimano Sedona works fine for a spinning reel.
I keep a 20 old Ugly stick in my car, that thing kicks butt.
Thought it was going to break about 20 times, just keeps catching fish.

    I love mine as well. I got the Shimano "Clarus" CSC-86M-2A That's 8' 6" long, Line WT 8-17lb, Lure WT 1/4-1 once, Power-Medium, Action-Fast.
This rod is designed for a conventional reel, aka Baitcaster. The spinning rod is CSS.
It took at least a year for me to understand how a rod like this would help me throw lures when I was comfortable with a 6'6" Fresh water Bass rod. Then I got a cheap "Sojourn" also by Shimano. I think it was around $35-$40 bucks. A 7 footer, I worked it hard and it worked me back. Once I stepped up to the "Clarus" what a relief.
If you have the $90 bucks and your not trying to horse in tuna you should be GTG. If you want something with a lot more backbone look at a Shimano "Teramar".
There's many brands out and I am only giving info on the ones I use. I am sure some of the other guys will have they fav's and the best thing is you get to chose.
Good luck with you pick. Also search some old post and I would bet you will find a ton of other good advice.

Thumbs up for the spinning model
