This season anything is game. I heard that some 3/4 boats down here found some 60lbs and lost many because anglers were under gunned, some got spooled and some got out matched. I never bring a knife to a possible gunfight. But u should be fine with the sx. Full of 50lb braid (I like Power pro)with a 6ft topshot seaguar (not premier) of 30lb tied to a 2/0 ringed owner gorilla J hook. I mean we had a 1/2 day pull out 22 yellowfin this week. So all bets are off!!

I use an old Penn jigmaster on a seeker American classic rod for trips up to 1.5 days and never a problem. I wouldn't spend a fortune on gear until you know what your comfortable with. When you spend enough time on the water you will start to figure out what works for you. Just my 2cents.

Last year was my first year fishing inshore/offshore. I started off with one setup, a Daiwa Saltist 35 with 70 lb braid & 100 yards of 30 lb mono on top paired with a Calstar 800m. Then I bought 15 lb, 20 lb, & 25 lb fluoro leader in case the fish are shy. I recommend starting off with a similar style so you can spend more money on fishing trips than the gear. Watch your fellow anglers on the boat & ask if you can look at their gear so you can physically see what you want.
